renovations
my tears and dreams of youhave been packed up, put away-
left to become dusty memeories,
sepia tinted photographs
of a more naive me.
the torch has been extinguished,
spaces you once occupied
renovated, gutted, cleaned
space available.

goodbye
to my uncle who taught me that you can tell stories on your skin, that everyone is different, which makes us all the same, and who let me race around the house in your wheelchair encouraging me to make another wheelie attempt, thank you.the only rules you lived by were the ones you set yourself. the beaten path was something you only visited occasionally, otherwise you blazed your own trail and expected others to do the same. you never let physical limitations stop you from experiencing life, laughter, and love. i don't know if you ever knew it, but you were a hero to most of us.
i know that wherever you are now, you're free from pain and i like to think that your hereafter is filled with horses to ride, streams to fish, animals to train, plentiful game trails, and solitude with the chance for company when the need arises. our prayers and love go with you, safe travels.
i think my cousin tim said it best..."Good bye Uncle Steve. The only man to actually run away and join the circus. We'll miss you."

Persephone descending
this, the season of goodbyesboth temporary and eternal.
as Persephone descends,
we each find our own sadness
and hold it close about us,
poor substitute for warmth
in this deep winter of Demeter's grief.
leaden skies mirror an earth
mourning the pomegranate's curse.
eyes flat with contained despair
watch the horizon,
praying, hoping, dreaming of
Persephone's rising, Demeter's celebration,
spring.
